Asking for a raise can feel intimidating. You might worry about what to say, how it will be received, or whether you will be taken seriously. When you prepare the right way, you don’t just ask for a raise, you’re confidently demonstrating why you’ve earned one.

Take time to identify what you’ve accomplished. Think about results you’ve delivered, goals you’ve exceeded, and ways you’ve contributed beyond your job description. This is your way of highlighting your success in your role! Show how your work has made a difference by highlighting measurable contributions, positive outcomes, and the impact you bring to the team and organizatio

Timing matters! Consider having this conversation during performance reviews, after taking on new responsibilities, when it’s been over a year since your last raise, or if your pay doesn’t align with industry standards in your area.

Keep the conversation centered around your contributions and results, rather than your wants or personal needs. Show how your work has positively impacted the team or organization.

Take time to practice the conversation – this is key for building confidence! Rehearse what you want to say, maintain eye contact, and communicate your achievements and goals clearly and professionally. Fill out the form on the left to schedule practice with your Career Coach.

Research salary ranges for similar roles in your area. Knowing your worth gives you a strong foundation and helps you make a well-informed request.

Be direct with your request. Rather than vaguely asking for “more,” present a thoughtful salary range backed by your results, experience, and research.

Be ready for common responses like “it’s not in the budget or “not right now.” Knowing how to respond can prevent you from freezing up or shutting down during the conversation.

Bottom line – You’ve got this! When you walk into that meeting prepared, you’re no longer hoping for a raise, you’re advocating for your value with clarity and confidence! And remember, you do not have to do it alone. If you need extra support preparing for this conversation, reach out to your Career Coach. Together, we’ll make sure that you’re fully ready to take that next step and THRIVE!
