Overpayment Support in Action
A look at how ERS Benefits Counselors help ticketholders navigate SSA overpayment notices — Case review period: August 4–11, 2026
Over a single one-week period, our Benefits Counselors and Community Partner Work Incentives Counselors (CPWICs) fielded 12 original overpayment-related cases — helping ticketholders make sense of confusing SSA notices, correct administrative errors, and protect their benefits going forward. We’re incredibly proud of the work our team does every day, and we wanted to share a look at what that support looks like in action.
What Our Counselors Accomplished This Week
Overpayments almost never come from anything a ticketholder did wrong. The cases our counselors reviewed point to administrative causes — SSA scanning and documentation errors, conflicting notices, and unclear reporting processes. An overpayment notice doesn’t mean someone did something wrong; it usually means the system got tangled, and our counselors untangle it.
Our counselors don’t just explain — they escalate and win. In one case, a three-way call with SSA uncovered that the agency had withheld over $800 in error from a ticketholder’s benefits. The counselor got a high-priority correction filed on the spot and secured a refund commitment — a real, provable financial win.
Proactive counseling prevents tomorrow’s overpayments, not just today’s. Several sessions turned a wage-increase or return-to-work conversation into a chance to build better reporting habits going forward, steering ticketholders toward reporting methods that provide proof of submission.
There’s a consistent, professional resolution process behind every case. Our counselors verify documentation, explain appeal and reconsideration timelines, request waivers or reduced recovery rates when appropriate, coordinate three-way SSA calls when records alone can’t resolve things, and reinforce good wage-reporting habits going forward.
And it makes a real difference. Ticketholders consistently tell us they feel relief and gratitude after getting a clear, patient explanation of a confusing notice — and more confidence navigating SSA processes afterward.
Real Stories From This Week
These stories are de-identified — no names or case numbers — and shared just as our team wrote them up.
The $800 Refund Win
“A ticketholder was worried about mysterious deductions from her benefits. Our Benefits Counselor got SSA on a three-way call — and within minutes, SSA admitted they’d withheld over $800 in error and agreed to refund it. That’s the power of having someone in your corner who knows exactly what questions to ask.”
The Conflicting-Letters Mystery
“Imagine getting one SSA letter saying you owe $21,000 — then another saying $51,000. One of our ticketholders did. Our Benefits Counselor is working line-by-line through both notices to figure out what actually happened, so she doesn’t have to face SSA alone.”
Turning a Scary Notice Into a Plan
“A $16,000 overpayment notice can feel like a gut punch. Our Benefits Counselor walked one ticketholder through her appeal rights, the 60-day window to respond, and exactly what documentation could turn things around — turning panic into a plan.”
Preventing the Next Overpayment
“Getting a raise should be good news — not a benefits headache. When one of our ticketholders’ hourly wage went up, our counselor made sure she knew exactly how to report it to SSA the right way, so a pay bump doesn’t turn into a surprise bill later.”
The Wage-Reporting Workaround
“Mailed your SSA wage reports and got no confirmation they arrived? You’re not alone. Our Benefits Counselors are teaching ticketholders about SSA’s more reliable reporting methods — fax, in-person, and the my Social Security portal — so there’s always proof it was received.”
Other Highlights Worth Celebrating
- High demand, met every time: 12 original overpayment-related outreach emails in just one week (not counting replies) — this is a constant, high-demand service our counselors show up for.
- Real depth of expertise: our counselors are fluent in Trial Work Period, Extended Period of Eligibility, and Substantial Gainful Activity rules, Impairment-Related Work Expenses, SSI’s 2-for-1 reduction, Expedited Reinstatement, Medicare premium withholding issues, and SSA forms (SSA-634, SSA-3033, SSA-561).
- Whole-person support: one ticketholder was reconnected with Career Services for job-search help and introduced to MeasureOne for easier wage documentation going forward — support that goes well beyond the immediate overpayment fix.
